Tuesday 29th July

harbour porpoises

It was all rather grey and choppy today but the wildlife sightings were extraordinary. On the four hour trip this morning we headed south into the murk which thankfully lifted and it wasn’t long before we found our first group of harbour porpoises. After stopping to reef the sail, we then sailed westwards across the bay and were accosted several times by small pods of common dolphins coming towards then away from us. On the far horizon we could see shearwaters and gannets in a massive cloud, and sailing towards it we saw tuna jumping then common dolphins before watching a really impressive feeding frenzy involving all of them. Finally under the shelter of the cliffs a pod of porpoises swam unhurriedly past us. The second trip was just as productive, with lots of seals hauled out on the rocks to start, then probably the most amazing porpoise encounter we’ve had. There are so many out there at the moment! We also saw multiple pods of common dolphins, big gannet work ups, breaching bluefin tuna and finally some Risso’s dolphins. Pretty good day.
