Friday 21st August
What a long day! Definitely a case of make hay while the sun shines, as conditions next week are currently looking dire! This morning we had a three hour trip and headed down west to find the tuna. Sure enough they were there leaping away, though hard to get photos of. There were some seals…
Thursday 20th August
We had a very “brisk” (aka screaming) northerly wind to contend with today, though there was not much swell. Because this offshore rather than onshore wind, it just means we can reef right down and run the trips safely, though it did mean the four hour trip was shortened to three hours. We did pretty…
It was a squally August day today with everything the weather could throw at us. This morning on the Discovery Voyage we had great sightings of several Risso’s dolphins, including mums with calves and also some males who were more boisterous. There were also lots of common dolphins, some grey seals and some tuna spotted….
Tuesday 18th August
Two Ocean Discovery trips today in conditions which seem to have entirely returned to normal! On this morning’s tour, conditions were reasonably tricky – we managed to find common dolphins and Risso’s dolphins but they were tricky. The hundreds of dolphins we were seeing a few days ago have moved offshore again for the moment….
A minke whale! Conditions reverted to normal Cornish summer fare today with a brisk westerly wind and intermittent rain and drizzle. The four hour trip this morning had some really great sightings despite the wet weather. During August, Risso’s dolphins become more unpredictable as they venture offshore then back again, feeding on squid as well…
Sunday 16th August
Back out on the water after a day off yesterday when it was very windy. Conditions had not changed much, with loads of dolphin and tuna feeding inshore on this morning’s Discovery Voyage trip, and hundreds of gannets and gulls hunting with them. We also spotted several sunfish including one breacher. There were a few…
Friday 14th August
It was a dark dim day today; it even tried to rain this afternoon, though it was still very warm. There were hundreds of dolphins in the bay today, maybe even up to a thousand. They were mainly concentrating on feeding with and around the tuna, and there were some massive fish down there. There…
Thursday 13th August
We had a really varied five hour Discovery Adventure this morning with lots of wildlife spotted. There was also a refreshing northwesterly breeze meaning we could sail a long way offshore and then back towards the coast. We spotted a total of four sunfish, three of them in one small stretch. The fourth one breached…
Wednesday 12th August
It’s Eclipse Day. We are not running evening trips to go and see the eclipse because frankly, we want to see it ourselves 😁. And unlike the last one, it’s clear and sunny, though sadly there has been a big fire out west this afternoon. Hopefully this has been contained. This morning was really quiet…
Tuesday 11th August
We had three fantastic trips today. The first one was a private charter organised by Dr Tom Horton of Exeter University, who used to be a Marine Discovery guide in another life! His recent research has investigated the stomach contents of landed tuna to see what they are eating – really important stuff if we…
