Friday 11th September

On this morning’s Bay Discovery I remarked it was feeling quite whaley based on nothing more than just how I felt. Not particularly scientific I know, but it can be quite accurate 😁. Soon after that a big patch of floating weed made everyone sit up and get excited, but no joy. What we did see were stacks of common dolphins over five different encounters and fourteen grey seals hauled out on the island. Seabirds feeding included gannets, Manx shearwaters and sandwich terns. 

It wasn’t until the afternoon Discovery Voyage that the whales turned up, so the earlier feeling was just a bit premature. Two minke whales were spotted, slicing through swell surfacing repeatedly. They circled the boat then headed off to where there were lots of gannets feeding. It has been a poor year for whales generally in Cornwall, but maybe things are about to change as autumn arrives. We also saw lots more common dolphins and an ocean sunfish. A pretty good day overall  – thanks to everyone who joined us.
