whale watching

Friday 19th July

Another long day today with a four hour trip followed by a three hour. This morning the weather was better, and the sun even peeped through at times. A few very tricky dolphins and a porpoise were spotted at the start of the trip, as well  as a couple of seals. We got much better…

Wednesday 17th July

We had a really varied day today. This morning we had our annual visit from a freediving club who like to combine a bit of a sail and wildlife watch with some underwater exploration. While we were looking for wildlife before the dive we found lots of common dolphins with feeding seabirds, harbour porpoises and glimpsed…

Saturday 13th July

We had a hastily planned Ocean Discovery trip this afternoon – well, you can’t miss a forecast like that, especially this summer! Calm conditions helped us spot three species of cetacean, as well as grey seals hauled out. First we had some lovely views of harbour porpoises, including a mother and her calf. Then we…

Wednesday 26th June

It was a mega busy day today in beautiful conditions. The first of the three trips set off in mirror calm conditions so we were hopeful for some good sightings. We soon got those with some lovely views of harbour porpoises – these diminutive cetaceans are so much easier to spot in calm conditions and…

Saturday 22nd June

We had a couple of great trips today, a Bay Discovery this morning and a Discovery Voyage this afternoon. This morning we headed out into the middle of the bay largely under sail, and started to pick up bits of sealife about four miles south. Firstly a glimpse of a porpoises, then a common dolphin…

Monday 17th June

What an absolutely cracking day we had today. It seems as though summer has finally arrived with a shift in the airflow and warmer temperatures. In the sea as well, we are starting to see blue jellyfish and ocean sunfish, a sure sign that the fronts have come closer in from offshore. We found three…

Sunday 19th May

We had a super long day today, with a three hour followed by a four hour trip, and the four hour was more like five hours! The reason for this is the amount of wildlife out there at the moment – it’s more on July levels than May. This morning was the quieter half  of…

Friday 17th May

We had a great couple of trips today in almost unbroken sunshine and on calm seas. On the morning Discovery Voyage we saw two minke whales, an juvenile followed later by a large adult feeding with lots of common dolphins and seabirds. This was the first big feeding frenzy we have seen so far this…

Sunday 28th April

We had a four hour trip today in bright cold conditions, perfect for sailing. We spotted two minke whales! One of them was probably the same one as we saw the other day and the second was a small juvenile, who do sometimes appear at this time of year. They were very fast, so no…

Sightings summary for 2023

I have been looking back over 2023 and made some images to represent our sightings of different species. We recorded cetaceans on 81% of our trips last year, which is an amazing sightings rate. 10252 dolphins, porpoises and whales! We also saw grey seals on most trips, bluefin tuna and ocean sunfish. Each image has…
