Common dolphin

Yesterday’s blog post is a little delayed because we are having problems with an sd card. Apologies to the passengers who joined us we are trying to extract the photos and will post them if we can.

Today we had two Ocean Discoveries today and they were full of wildlife.

This morning we started off with plenty of seals hauled out around the island, including a male who hauled out and disturbed the peace slightly. We then started to raise the sails just as a blue-fin tuna did multiple breaches which, luckily, everyone was looking in the right direction to watch. We sailed out and picked up multiple pods of common dolphins who did a mixture of bow-riding, resting and socialising amongst themselves. As we made our way back towards Penzance a sunfish popped up with its “waggly” fin waving at us. Followed by a group of porpoises who surfed in behind us. We got some good views of a couple of porpoise calves as they overtook us.

This afternoon was similar in that we were heading towards some distant feeding which slowed down before we arrived. We still found some common dolphin groups in the area and they were displaying a mixture of behaviours, this time some juveniles were head slapping and very acrobatic in their breaching. We sailed further out and found several other groups of dolphins who interacted with us. We decided to follow some feeding that had set up closer in the bay as the trip progressed and we were rewarded to common dolphins and blue fin tuna feeding together. The tuna did some spectacular thrashes and breaches close to the boat.
