Dolphins

Monday 8th June

The first trip we had this morning was with some students from Newquay College. They came out to learn about data collection techniques, and hopefully to have a good sail and find some wildlife, and got all of those things. A brisk westerly wind meant great sailing conditions, and we found a very cool ocean…

Friday 5th June

Back out on the water today after and extremely windy week. We couldn’t do the first five hour of the season as planned, but we were able to get out for a 3 hour Ocean Discovery, and we’re very glad we did. As often happens after strong westerly wind, there was lots of life about,…

Tuesday 26th May

It was another mirror calm day and we had common dolphins on all three trips. The first of these was a three hour Ocean Discovery, when we saw multiple pods including mums with some very small calves. We were extra careful around them for this reason, stopping still and allowing them to come to us….

Sunday 24th May

We had some amazing sightings today. On the morning trip we started off with a male seal hauled out on the rocks, followed a short while later by a young female who had caught a massive conger eel! The poor eel was skinned and eaten alive, and it shows that even small, cute looking seals…

Thursday 21st May

We had an Ocean Discovery trip this afternoon in improving conditions! It started off misty and murky and the swell and chop was coming from at least three different directions after the strong wind of the last couple of days. It didn’t stop the wildlife though. The seabirds were amazing with hundreds of shearwaters spotted,…

Monday 13th April

We had an Ocean Discovery trip this afternoon in bright breezy conditions. Stopping at the island on the way out, we saw two grey seals hauled out even at high tide and two more bobbing around, sleeping in the water. Hearing the curlews bubbling evocative call, we saw a flock of them flying past, their…

Wednesday 22nd October

We had a Discovery Voyage trip this morning which is quite late in the year for us to be running this four hour trip. It was a cracker of a morning, starting clear and calm with a hint of low sunshine. Quite soon after leaving the harbour we started picking up fins in the distance,…

Thursday 9th October

We had a full Ocean Discovery today, which is nice for October weekday. It felt very similar to yesterday – cool and grey, and everything was really quiet for about an hour. We passed what was initially mistaken for a skua, until we realised it was a peregrine falcon which was flying back towards the…

Wednesday 1st October

We had a Bay Discovery and a Discovery Voyage today on what looks like the last nice day before some foul weather comes in. Both trips were very productive with lots of common dolphins seen on both, including some very young calves. They were swimming close to their mothers in a big maternal pod. Seabird…

Wednesday 24th September

We had another lovely day today. Bright sunshine and calm seas allowed us to search offshore. In the morning we found lots of different groups of harbour porpoises and had some lovely interactions in the calm conditions. We also saw a variety of seabirds including many arctic skuas, who were harassing kittiwakes for their catch….
