Friday 3rd July

A porpoise surfacing in calm blue ocean water.
It was a calm start to the day with a building westerly breeze that developed into lovely sailing conditions. We had a bit of a bonanza on this morning’s Discovery Voyage trip again, with Risso’s dolphins spotted first, included some mothers with small calves. There were also two encounters with porpoises, firstly with a pair and at the end a large group in by the coast. There were also some flying common dolphins who enthusiastically approached us to bow ride, and at the end a few seals hauled out.

On the afternoon Ocean Discovery trip we found another group of Risso’s, this time with some even younger calves so we kept a respectful distance from them. They were close enough to sea that adorable floppy surface you get from baby dolphins before they have got used to life. The dolphins were spread over quite a large areas and were largely uninterested in us, so we went to inspect the seals who were close to being washed off the rocks by the incoming tide. Mousehole is looking wonderful – bedecked with flags as it plays host to the visiting traditional vessels. Several of them were spotted sailing out to sea and we also saw a massive tall ship coming in from the west.
