Saturday 4th July

This morning’s Discovery Voyage was a bit of a slow burner but the wildlife appeared eventually! Straight south of here we picked up a very small pod of very avoidant dolphins who clearly weren’t interested so we left them alone to do their thing. We then motored sailed (the wind was light) a long way south west and everything was quiet so we headed into the shore where we found a more lively group of common dolphins. They were hunting and socialising and came over to bowride “Shearwater II”, giving us some lovely views. We also had good views of a small sunfish at the surface. On the way back to Penzance we watched the old boats racing by Mousehole, which was a wonderful sight. Quite a few seals were hauled out on the island who were taking no notice at all of the spectacle!
On this afternoon’s Bay Discovery trip the seals had all shifted around a bit and now the male, “Seaweed” was squashed up with the ladies. He is a very handsome seal! The races were still going on and the passengers loved the sight – it’s such a wonderful event. Just out from the coast we saw an Arctic skua harrassing some gulls. This is quite a rare seabird to see, and we usually spot them later in the year.
We have a day off tomorrow, but some spaces are left on trips on Tuesday and Wednesday. It looks very calm.
