Wednesday 25th August

We had every weather today: wind, drizzle, fog and finally boiling sunshine to end the day 🥵. Given the conditions on this morning’s Discovery Voyage we did really well to find several groups of common dolphins (in the fog!) and a grey seal hauled out on the rocks. No tuna today, but we saw the peregrine falcon from the other day. Finally as we headed back towards Penzance we were rewarded by seeing a Risso’s “heat run” – this is when a boisterous group over hormonal males try and isolate a female to mate with her. It’s often accompanied by some extreme acrobatics, rushes of speed and rough interaction. The presence of Risso’s round our shores has gone on far longer then usual this year.

The second trip of the day was a more peaceful affair – well apart from the yells of excitement from our young guests on board. They were from a local youth group and it was the first time for a lot of them on a boat. The wind had dropped and the sun had come out, but there was still a lot of waves to get wet in at the front of the catamaran. To add to the excitement we found a small group of common dolphins in the middle of the bay – definitely a first for all of them including the adults! Love it when a plan comes together.
