Thursday 3rd July
A long day today with a four hour trip followed by a three hour. Things started off glassy calm though with quite a deceptive leftover swell from yesterday. After watching six snoozing seals, we saw a porpoise first thing followed immediately by a quiet group of common dolphins…followed by further groups of much more animated dolphins. The sea was so full of plankton it was like pea soup, with lots of blue, compass and moon jellyfish in it. Coming back into the bay we saw the tell tale remains of cuttlefish. No sooner as we’d said “look out for Risso’s dolphins,” we saw some Risso’s dolphins. Though they were a scattered pod and their behaviour was much more reserved than we’d seen lately, we got some good views of four animals. This afternoon it was quiet for the first hour, but then the common dolphins appeared. The breeze had filled in meaning we got some good sailing in too. What we thought was a storm petrel turned out to be a house martin out at sea! At the end of the trip, we saw several sleepy seals hauled out on the rocks as the tide dropped away.
