Thursday 10th July

Risso's mum and calf

We’re having an amazing week, though it did feel very different out there today with wildlife not nearly as obvious. All the more rewarding when seek and then you find! This morning there was a large pod of common dolphins spotted further out, while closer inshore it was harbour porpoises that were found in the bay area. We also found some grey seals hauled out on the low tide – it’s very hot for the seals in this weather so they’re doing their best to keep cool. On the afternoon Ocean Discovery trip we searched high and low and were rewarded with a couple of porpoises early on, then later a pair of juvenile dolphins entertained themselves around the boat. Further out we found a much larger pod, including some small calves who were very playful.  A short while later we spotted a mum/calf pair of Risso’s dolphins, much further out than we have been seeing them. The large numbers from yesterday had moved on. Then coming back into the bay, numerous porpoises popped up.
