Tuesday 15th August

a dog swimming in a body of water

It was such a relief today to have sunny calm weather – all day long! And luckily we did because we had 2 three hour trips followed by an evening two hour trip. We saw lots of common dolphins on all three of the trips, along with many hauled out grey seals on the low tide this morning. The highlight for us was seeing incredibly large numbers of porpoises on the early afternoon trip – they were feeding with gannets in that stop start way that porpoises have, and there were scores of them. Hard to estimate numbers but there were well over sixty, possibly more. It feels sometimes that the numbers of common dolphins and bluefin tuna we have had in the bay in the last few summers might have had an adverse effect on porpoises numbers, but that would need some proper study. In the evening light we had some gorgeous views of shearwaters too feeding with the dolphins.
