Thursday 11th July

common dolphins

We had a great day today with two Ocean Discovery trips, lots of wildlife spotted and some big happy smiles. This morning we found a big pod of harbour porpoises in an area we used to find them frequently. They were feeding with some gannets and Josh managed to snap some of the fish in the beaks of the gannets – looks like small pilchards. We also found four groups of common dolphins; they seem to be getting gradually more consistent. Everything feels a little later this year. This afternoon we headed out to where we’d seen them during the morning but they had moved on of course! So we sailed close to shore and just a couple of gannets having a look in the distance showed us where the dolphins had gone, and we had a really lovely encounter. They were socialising and tactile and interactive. We also saw several grey seals on the island, including one very cute youngster.
