Monday 22nd September
Dry and sunny today – a very welcome development. We had a three hour trip but sailed so far south west it turned into four hours! There was plenty of wildlife to be seen including large numbers of common dolphins and harbour porpoises (which were too quick to get photos of!) and sixteen seals hauled…
Tuesday 16th September
After the strong wind of the last two days (more strong wind) we were back out today and conditions were surprisingly benign. This morning we saw several grey seals round the island and a couple of groups of harbour porpoises, but on the whole it was rather quiet. This afternoon we tried a different route…
Saturday 13th September
Conditions today were similar to yesterday’s, though with no rain and slightly less swell. This morning on our three hour trip we saw plenty of grey seals and seabirds including a sooty and Cory’s shearwater. We also found some common dolphins and had some clear (though brief!) views of harbour porpoises. There are a lot…
Friday 12th September
This weather 😱! There was a bit of a window this morning so we headed out, undecided about whether it would be two or three hours. We sailed southwards into increasing swell, looking for fins among the waves and the birds. One lady saw a tuna breach, but the rest of us were all the…
Friday 29th August
The wind and swell is playing havoc wit our schedule at the moment, however we managed to sneak out for a Bay Discovery trip this morning. This was due to be a 3 hour trip but because of the wind and sea conditions we shortened it and stayed in the relative shelter of the Bay….
Saturday 2nd August
There were common dolphins everywhere today. It was a beautiful day with a lovely sailing breeze. We found them on their own, with feeding gannets, and with feeding shearwaters. We also spotted that tell tale stop start of tons of gannets piling into the water when they are following and feeding with porpoises – we…
Wednesday 9th July
We had an extraordinary day on the water today on our Discovery Voyage and Ocean Discovery trips – the bay was absolutely thick with wildlife. From the outset we saw loads of harbour porpoises, followed by lots of small pods of common dolphins everywhere we went. We also caught sight of our first bluefin tuna…
Saturday 14th June
We had a lovely look at several harbour porpoises on this morning’s Ocean Discovery trip. While we see them very frequently later in the summer, views at this time of year are often more difficult and fleeting, but not today! We also saw some common dolphins, lots of seabirds and some grey seals hauled out….
Monday 9th July
It all felt distinctly unpromising this afternoon with grey sky, grey sea and the threat of rain. However, despite the showers sweeping along the coast behind us, we didn’t get wet at all. We saw a few very lazy grey seals snoozing in the water by the island, before sailing offshore where we were “mugged”…
Sunday 8th June
We had an Ocean Discovery trip this morning and a Discovery Voyage trip this afternoon, and it was the morning people who had the most luck with the sightings. There were several seals hauled out on the island including two small juveniles and Kelp the old female we have been watching for so many years….
