Sunday 8th June

common dolphin

We had an Ocean Discovery trip this morning and a Discovery Voyage trip this afternoon, and it was the morning people who had the most luck with the sightings. There were several seals hauled out on the island including two small juveniles and Kelp the old female we have been watching for so many years. We sailed southwards and just where the front was, we picked up a small sunfish which gave us some really great views. As we were watching that, we were spotted by a group of 6-8 juvenile common dolphins who appeared to be looking for something to do! They made a beeline for us, then as we slowly sailed away, they came with us and we all had a great time as they bowrode. This afternoon the breeze got up a bit which made things choppy especially round the Runnelstone area. One of the passengers spotted a porpoise, but the rest of us had to content ourselves with the seabirds and a great sail. We watched the Sennen lifeboat heading back inshore, and also saw a grey seal.
