Sunday 22nd September

ocean sunfish
It was really gloomy today for our Ocean Discovery and Bay Discovery trips, but all things considered we were really lucky not to get wet, especially after yesterday’s thunderstorms. We had a couple of excellent trips with some really good wildlife sightings. This morning we very quickly spotted something round jumping repeatedly out of the water – a sunfish! It must have done six or seven breaches then lay obligingly at the surface for photos.  Further on we had some good encounters with harbour porpoises and common dolphins and we did spot some tuna jumping as well. It was very calm. There are patches in the bay where the water is thick with mauve stingers – every year these days it seems as thought there is a different jellyfish (or similar) bloom in September. We then saw four seals hauled out on the rocks. The afternoon trip was pretty much a repeat of the morning, sightings wise, only an hour shorter! No sunfish this afternoon though – it’s getting late in the year for them.

Our late summer warmth looks as though it has moved away now, but we are still open through to the end of October. There are spaces this week, though keep your eye open for weather updates if you are booked on.
