Saturday 20th June

Sunfish partially submerged in clear blue water. After the fog and murk of the week, today’s sunshine was very welcome. This morning there were Risso’s dolphins everywhere, right in the bay in all different directions. And looking at reports from other areas of Cornwall, other people are reporting the same. There appears to be a lot of cephalopod spawning going on right now. We also saw a sunfish and some grey seals. This afternoon I was so confident we would see the Risso’s again I announced it almost as a certainty – what a silly thing to do. Instead though we found large numbers of common dolphins later in the trip, who we watched feeding before the took off with an amazing series of leaps. There was another pod in the area, but they were very elusive. As we approached the harbour, we had amazing views of an ocean sunfish lying at the surface – this is the best start to the season for sunfish we have had for years.
