Saturday 18th April

We had a freezing but fabulous trip this morning in the April sunshine. The wind was blowing steadily from the northwest, making perfect, fun sailing conditions and coupled with the long westerly swell it made an exciting ride. There were eight seals hauled out on the island made up of males, females and juveniles. We counted them carefully, and will be reporting them as part of the Cornwall Seal Research Trust’s spring census. Heading offshore numbers of seabirds started to build; they were mainly Manx shearwaters who were loving the breeze, but also lots of groups of guillemots and some gannets. As we sped inshore, we were mugged by a friendly group of common dolphins who appeared from nowhere! In the sunshine their beautiful colours looked really bright. They swam with us a while before peeling away and we continued back into the bay. We had 14 knots at one point!
