Sunday 26th April

porpoise dorsal fin emerging from calm water surface.

Back from Dundee straight to a full day on the water! This morning’s two hour passengers were treated to a brief view of some distant Risso’s dolphins – our first of the season. We also saw some seals hauled out on the island including a young juvenile. There were so many seabirds today – the bay is chockablock with baitfish. We could see them bubbling in big patches in the calm water. We then had a four hour Discovery Voyage trip; it was still really calm, with thousands and thousands of seabirds. Big mixed flocks of gannets, auks, razorbills, fulmars and kittiwakes bobbed around on the water, and countless shearwaters soared through. We also saw an adult puffin very close to the boat. Further west we saw a small pod of about four harbour porpoises sleepily swim past us, very close. Inshore and round near Land’s End we saw a couple of seals bobbing, though it was surprisingly quiet. As we headed through Porthcurno we saw a packed Minack Theatre and heard the unmistakable harmonies of the Fishermen’s Friends as they gave their matinee concert!
