Tuesday 28th April

There was a brisk northeasterly wind blowing over a sea which was full of southeasterly swell today which make for some rather confused sea conditions. We sailed from Penzance Harbour southwards then west all the way down to Gewnnap Head, where we again found absolutely stacks of seabirds feeding in the tidal race – guillemots, razorbills, Manx shearwaters, kittiwakes and gannets. We looked hard of porpoise fins, but the choppy sea didn’t make that easy. In Porthcurno we found a group of gannets diving so there is obviously fish inshore, but any wind from the northeast at this time of year seems to drive cetaceans offshore. We then motored inshore along the coast back into the bay, where we stopped at the island where a solitary seal gave us a look before diving underneath the water. A quiet day but late April can do that!
Conditions for the forthcoming May Bank Holiday Weekend are looking good and we have spaces on all three different trips.
