Monday 21st July

a man swimming in a body of water

It grew increasingly windy today, as forecast, so the second trip was shortened from three hours to two. This morning’s Ocean Discovery started calm enough, and there were a couple of really big feeding events spotted involving common dolphins, gannets, shearwaters and a few little storm petrels too. There was some big swell leftover from the Saturday night’s wind (yesterday was cancelled for the same reason) which was causing some issues for the seals at their haul out spot as the tide came in. A couple of them got washed off their rock and were bundled around in the surf, but seals are tough. This afternoon we saw them dozing in the water on the high tide, before we sailed off into the centre of the bay to see if we could spot any fins, but the wind had really whipped up making spotting conditions difficult. We saw a porpoise in among the waves, before sailing back inshore to the Mount.
