Wednesday 9th July
We had an extraordinary day on the water today on our Discovery Voyage and Ocean Discovery trips – the bay was absolutely thick with wildlife. From the outset we saw loads of harbour porpoises, followed by lots of small pods of common dolphins everywhere we went. We also caught sight of our first bluefin tuna of the year, which is quite early. Later in the trip we also saw some Risso’s dolphins. This afternoon, we very quickly picked up two Risso’s dolphins which turned into more and more…we tracked them from a distance across the bay and watched them start to hunt. Some of them were definitely individuals we saw yesterday…and from chatting with others, it seems there are a lot more Risso’s in the wider area as well. Later on we saw some quiet common dolphins and then further out a minke whale! This is the first whale since we saw the fin whale a couple of weeks back, so that was good to see. We then found a lot more common dolphins further out, hunting with gannets and Manx shearwaters.
