Wednesday 14th August

breaching porpoise

Today was one of those days when the harbour porpoises completely outshone the dolphins. They were feeding energetically in large pods, and because at this time of year they are eating shoaling fish like the dolphins, this appears to give them more free time. And what do they do with this free time….they become much more nosy! They also seem to enjoy slightly choppy conditions which gives them waves to surf down – they were even semi bowriding us at one point. We also saw the clearest closest mating breach we have ever seen…and Josh managed to snap the whole thing on camera! Nice one! This afternoon there were loads of them feeding with gannets, and then swimming round us for quite while, and then we found another group doing the same. We did find a group of common dolphins this morning also, but it’s great to celebrate the porpoises. At the end of the day we had lovely views of Seaweed the seal hauled out on the rocks.
