Tuesday 8th April

common dolphin

Another beautiful sunny day, though this morning that pesky easterly was still blowing. A few of our younger guests on this morning’s Bay Discovery were DESPERATE to sit on the net – we did warn them they would get wet if they did. Sure enough their wish was granted 😁. We saw a couple of grey seals round the island then headed off into the bay and saw a few guillemots and gannets but on the whole it was rather quiet.
On this afternoon’s Ocean Discovery (3 hour) trip, it was a different story with the first big group of common dolphins of the season spotted. We watched them feeding with lots of gannets and shearwaters, and then they came over to visit us, giving everyone on board lovely views. Interestingly, after hearing of several spotted round the Cornish coast, we also saw a barrel jellyfish. The last time they appeared in the spring, it was 2013 and they stayed and stayed and stayed, increasing in number until sometimes we could hardly move for them. They were around for two summers until they suddenly disappeared. Incidentally, summer 2013 and summer 2014 were warm and sunny! Make of that what you will.
