Thursday 3rd August

dolphin tail
We had a very busy day today with three trips in strong northerly wind. This pushed a lot of those pelagic seabirds which have been feeding in the bay lately further offshore, where we couldn’t go! There were still thousands of Manx shearwaters inshore though, and also some storm petrels and fulmars. We saw common dolphins on all three of the trips, as well as grey seals. In fact we counted 12 seals hauled out on the low tide, which is more than we have seem at that site for a while. We also saw a harbour porpoise on the trip in the middle of the day. If it calms down, I expect we’ll find a lot more of them –  and by some miracle! It looks as though we might get some calmer weather soon, including tomorrow (the less said about Saturday the better).
