Thursday 24th September

It’s still so busy it’s hard to believe we’re at the end of September. This morning’s Ocean Discovery was tuna-tastic, with enormous numbers of really large fish leaping and splashing sporadically all through the inner bay area. At one point a feeding frenzy set up right next to us as we sat motionless watching some dolphins, with white water frothing and churning as the tuna rushed through it. We could even see the desperate prey trying to evade them – some kind of clupeid by the looks of what the gulls were carrying off in their beaks. Sorry dolphins, but when all that is going on you take a bit of a back seat! There were also several seals hauled out on the low tide, sleeping in the low autumn sun.
This afternoon’s four hour trip was trickier – a south easterly wind had risen which made things rather choppy. Wildlife was more widely dispersed and harder to find, but we did have encounters with common dolphins, some more bluefin tuna and finally had lovely views of a good number of harbour porpoises. They have not been as numerous in Mount’s Bay as normal Septembers, so it was great to see them.
