Friday 25th September

Dolphin swimming in the ocean with water splashing around.

As predicted the last couple of days, today had become rather trickier to find wildlife after the bonanza of the last couple of weeks. This morning we had a private charter for a family, who were very keen to find cetaceans and tuna. We did find common dolphins and tuna, but they were much trickier and less predictable than they have been. We had an interesting trip though with lots to see and talk about.

On the afternoon four hour the swell had really built, giving us some spectacular views of chunky waves hitting the cliffs at Land’s End and sending up huge spray. It was a long, slow swell with not much wind, which meant exciting, fun sea conditions with none of the downsides! We found several groups of common dolphins throughout the trip, including some in the big Atlantic swells near Land’s End. There were gannets circling high overhead throughout the tour, though no particular concentrations of diving. We had brief but clear views of a couple of harbour porpoises near Lamorna, followed shortly afterwards by some more dolphins which followed us into the bay as we sailed. As we approached Penzance we had a brief flurry of tuna activity.
