Thursday 31st July
It was a damp, windy day today but definitely could have been worse. The bluefin tuna are here with a vengeance now, accompanied by huge numbers of seabirds including thousands of shearwaters, gannets, kittiwakes and other gulls. Common dolphins are hunting with them and the pace is very frenetic. The seals and porpoises are far…
Wednesday 30th July
A busy day today with three trips, and the wildlife in the bay is still pumping! Today we have seen so many porpoises again, common dolphins here there and everywhere including some mums with very young calves, bluefin tuna busting at the surface and grey seals lazing around enjoying the summer. Seabirds have included gannets,…
Tuesday 29th July
It was all rather grey and choppy today but the wildlife sightings were extraordinary. On the four hour trip this morning we headed south into the murk which thankfully lifted and it wasn’t long before we found our first group of harbour porpoises. After stopping to reef the sail, we then sailed westwards across the…
Monday 28th July
We had a proper mixture of weather today with sunshine, breeze and drizzle. The wildlife sightings were great though. On the morning Bay Discovery a big mass of gannet feeding showed us where there were scores of porpoises feeding in the bay. The fish shoals were very mobile and the porpoises were in an incredible…
Sunday 27th July
It was another lovely day with a perfect sailing breeze. We saw a group of harbour porpoises early on this morning followed by a few small groups of common dolphins . There were a couple of seals bottling round the island at the end of the trip. This morning everything was a bit more lively…
Friday 25th July
It was a beautiful morning today for our Ocean Discovery trip, and we saw loads of wildlife – porposies, lots of common dolphins and grey seals. We also saw some tuna breaching and managed to get a photo – never a foregone conclusion with tuna! On the afternoon Discovery Voyage the sun disappered but the…
Thursday 24th July
It was a mega busy day yesterday, with an Ocean Discovery followed by two Bay Discovery trips. Lots to see out there in the morning with common dolphins, porpoises, a minke whale and grey seals as well as lots of diving gannets (where have the sheawaters gone? Offshore meeting the incoming tuna? Time will tell)….
Monday 21st July
It grew increasingly windy today, as forecast, so the second trip was shortened from three hours to two. This morning’s Ocean Discovery started calm enough, and there were a couple of really big feeding events spotted involving common dolphins, gannets, shearwaters and a few little storm petrels too. There was some big swell leftover from…
Thursday 17th July
Another great variety of wildlife spotted today with grey seals, loads of common dolphins, several groups of harbour porpoises and some Risso’s dolphins on the morning four hour trip. Seabirds again included lots of storm petrels and diving gannets. This afternoon’s three hour trip was really chilled – we watched some common dolphins feeding with…
Wednesday 16th July
After a few days off due to strong wind we were back out on the water today. It was calmer though it rained almost all day. However after a westerly blow like that, if you are prepared to put on your waterproofs and maybe get wet, there is often so much wildlife to be seen…
