Saturday 25th July

We did two Ocean Discovery trips today after moving Sunday’s people to Saturday due to the incoming strong wind.

It was a great day with a sunny start and lots of harbour porpoises and some grey seals. Sailing conditions were better than they have been for some time with a steady northwesterly wind. This afternoon we could see a weather front approaching and the afternoon got greyer and windier – we desperately need the rain. Have a look at how parched the grass on the island by Mousehole is on the photo. We saw several seals bobbing around there at high tide then a little way southwards as we were hoisting the sails, we were accosted completely unexpectedly by a maternal pod of common dolphins. Each of the adult females had a calf with her, who they had brought inshore. We sailed carefully watching them move slowly and sleepily before continuing out to sea on the increasing wind. Miles out to sea we were briefly “mugged” twice by groups of common dolphins who then completely disappeared. Heading back into the bay as the wind was really starting to gust we found yet another group of dolphins and this lot were much more interactive and energetic. Everyone got some brilliant views.
