Friday 24th July

We had a four hour followed by a two hour trip today. In the fresh northerly breeze, spotting wildlife was quite tricky as it had all been blown a long way out to sea. Heading westwards this morning we had several encounters with harbour porpoises, then a single Risso’s dolphin swam right past the boat in a completely unexpected location. Passing the island we saw Kelp the seal hauled out, and then a small female looking over at us from the water – very cute!

We went far further than intended on this afternoon’s Bay Discovery! (plus I left the camera in the office – I’m surprised we didn’t see a humpback whale or something). It was all very quiet inshore, so we headed way out….and kept going! Under very distant gannets we finally found some porpoises dashing about and hunting, which thankfully everyone got to see. It was a long bash back into the northerly wind! We found a couple of female seals hauled out on the island to finish the trip.
