Monday 24th September

minke whale

What a four hour trip we had this morning. Spotting conditions were more or less perfect and we saw more or less everything. There were three groups of common dolphins in all, who gave us some great views as they swam beside the boat. There were very large numbers of harbour porpoises seen, hunting quickly, travelling slowly and swimming round Shearwater II in an inquisitive manner. After seeing large numbers of gannets diving in the distance, we approached the area and had great views of an adult minke whale surfacing repeatedly. This was accompanied by some awesome seabird sightings, including gannets of course, Manx, Balearic, Cory’s and Great shearwaters, kittiwakes and an Arctic skua. As well as the whale and the birds in this area, there were some explosions of hunting bluefin tuna at the surface, some of which were really big fish. And to finish the trip there were several seals hauled out on the island, and several others who were bobbing around waiting for the tide to drop. So Duncan did get his birthday whale!

Next spaces available are on Saturday on the four hour and three hour trips.
