Friday 19th July
Another long day today with a four hour trip followed by a three hour. This morning the weather was better, and the sun even peeped through at times. A few very tricky dolphins and a porpoise were spotted at the start of the trip, as well as a couple of seals. We got much better views of common dolphins after we headed westwards a little and saw them near Porthchapel. This afternoon things switched a bit – the sea got a bit lumpy and southwesterly and we had quiet persistent murk and drizzle. However the wildlife sightings were amazing! That can often happen in the summer – when the rest of the country is hot but we in Cornwall are shrouded in fog and wind from the Bay of Biscay, it also seems to bring prey in followed swiftly by predators. This afternoon just out from Mousehole we saw a couple of minke whales lunge feeding through masses of fish, accompanied by many common dolphins and also large numbers of seabirds. The gannets and shearwaters have returned thank goodness. It was an awe inspiring sight.
