Friday 16th May

grey seal
We had a great four hour Discovery Voyage this morning. To start with there were a couple of seals hauled out – while this doesn’t sound like much, the site has been devoid of all seals for a couple of weeks and we have been missing them. I’m sure it’s because the prolonged anticyclone and calm conditions at Land’s End have meant the seals moved moved to more exposed, remote spots. The male seal was righ next to a massive urchin! Heading south we encountered five groups of common dolphins who gave us some great views, including lots of calves and juveniles and some active bowriding. There were again lots of seabirds feeding with the dolphins, including diving gannets, shearwaters and auks. We also spotted our first ocean sunfish of the year! In recent years these have been way fewer in number than a decade or so again, so it’ll be interesting to see what this year brings.
