Whale surfacing in blue ocean with visible blowhole spray.

It was a squally August day today with everything the weather could throw at us. This morning on the Discovery Voyage we had great sightings of several Risso’s dolphins, including mums with calves and also some males who were more boisterous. There were also lots of common dolphins, some grey seals and some tuna spotted. The wind really picked up during the tour meaning we had some really fast exciting sailing.

This afternoon we headed into the bay where there were lots of gannets feeding but curiously, nothing showing underneath them. I think it must have been tuna feeding further down in the water and not visible at the surface. Keen to see some actual breaching tuna, we headed into the wind along the coast to where there has been so much inshore tuna leaping the last few days. Sure enough almost as soon as we got there, we saw the tell tale fleeing garfish followed shortly by a couple of huge bluefin jumps. We then sailed offshore and had a great run back eastwards as we found several small pods of common dolphins, five of which swam with us a couple of miles. One of them had its dorsal fin sliced almost clean off. Off Lamorna we sailed through a short lived though dramatic squall – very August!
