Friday 10th July

A day of two halves, with calm conditions on this morning’s 3 hour tour, but a building easterly wind made things rather choppy at times on the 4 hour tour this afternoon. This morning we found lots of cetaceans, including Risso’s dolphins, common dolphins and porpoises as well as grey seals in the water. There were lots more seabirds feeding than there have been too, though nothing massively sustained yet. This afternoon was rather trickier – we went a long way off to the south, but apart from a single porpoises and the odd small raft of seabirds everything had really quietened down. Coming back inshore we saw a few gannets circling over splashes which turned out to be some extremely elusive common dolphins. One of them came a little closer, giving us better views. Our luck improved when heading back east along the coast and we caught up with a couple of Risso’s dolphins.
