Saturday 11th July

Normally an easterly wind is really unwelcome, but today was so roasting hot that breeze from any direction was very welcome. Being an easterly wind it did mess up the sea state a bit so spotting wildlife was a little tricky. This morning the breeze was a little lighter though and we were able to spot some common dolphins feeding with gulls and gannets from some distance away. They interacted with us briefly but were mainly doing their own thing. A little later a small pod of about five came racing towards us looking all keen! Their interest didn’t last that long though and they soon continued eastwards. We also spotted a couple of seals who were logging round the island at low tide.
Over lunch the breeze built, but it was only windy in localised patches so at some point we were flying along and at other points we had to motor. In the middle of the bay we spotted some gannets feeding in an area which is really reliable for porpoises at this time of year. Sure enough they were there and it was so clear, we could see them busily racing through the waves as they hunted. Then they did a little parade past the stern of the boat, giving us lovely clear views. We then had a lovely cooling (and splashy!) sail across the bay.
Unfortunately Josh has injured himself meaning he’ll be out of action for a bit and we’re a team member down. Please be patient if you’re trying to get through and I’ll answer your message when I’m back on dry land.
