Wednesday 5th August

It was a full on day today with a morning Ocean Discovery followed by two Bay Discovery trips. All three of them had great sightings. This morning there were plunging gannets as far as you could see, and masses of common dolphins with them. These stretched from right in the inner part of the bay to further offshore. There was a great northwesterly breeze blowing for sailing and an exciting swell rolling from the west after the two days of stronger wind. There were bluefin tuna there too, though not showing as well, but we did have lovely views of a large pod of porpoises who were driving just as much gannet diving as the dolphins were.

This afternoon the common dolphins remained and we were also treated to the seals who had hauled out on the dropping tide. One of the females looks as though she has picked up an injury on her neck – there’s a blood stained patch of fur there. The middle trip passengers were also lucky enough to see Risso’s dolphins along with the commons – a pod of mums and calves who swam right past us.

It was great to have a good sail – tomorrow looks as though it’s calming down and warming up again
