Tuesday 28th October

Seals resting on rocky shore with seaweed, surrounded by many seagulls.

We had a three hour followed by a two hour trip today. It was still fairly windy and choppy which made searching conditions difficult. However this morning we had some great views of leaping bluefin tuna as well as gannets, kittiwakes and lots of grey seals. During the afternoon’s Bay Discovery there were even more seals hauled out on the rocks and we saw lots of seabirds who had recently been feeding in some quite exposed areas, so again fin spotting was tricky. Sailing smoothly across the bay to the Mount with the wind behind us was a delight and we had another treat as darkness fell: we sailed out into the middle of the bay with a good friend who rescued and rehabilitated a little storm petrel which had flown into the harbour and become entangled in carelessly discarded fishing line. The lovely little thing was desperate to be off out to sea again, and we watched it flutter away into the gathering darkness.
