Tuesday 16th June

It was bleak and foggy this morning, but the trip was thoroughly brightened by some great wildlife sightings at the end of the trip. Fog often disorientates seabirds so they come closer to the coast and down onto the sea surface. We saw a couple of grey seals hauled out in a spot we have never seen them before, and they looked as though they weren’t quite sure whether they should be there or not! There were diving gannets in Porthcurno, Manx shearwaters and kittiwakes. Back in the bay, we started seeing cuttlefish being scavenged by gulls, and then some big splashes – the Risso’s were putting on a full on breaching display. Yesterday it was one individual doing it, and today they were all at it! It was very misty and murky so hard to get in focus shots but Josh managed a few. At the island we had some lovely views of more seals and then as we approached the harbour already running late, they found another group of very active Risso’s.
