Thursday 9th April

It started grey and mizzly this morning, but things took an unexpected turn on the Ocean Discovery trip with two full breaches from a massive basking shark! This was a huge surprise as we have seen none at all since 2021, and only a few tiddlers have been spotted around the whole coast of Cornwall at all. I’ve just seen footage of masses of them off the Kerry coast on Instagram, so that’s where they are hanging out at the moment. After the breaches we didn’t see it again, but had a great trip with some very keen and interested guests. This was then followed by two Bay Discovery trips so it was a long day. As forecast, the wind really blew up over lunch time, but the northwesterly direction and small swell meant we could reef the sails right down and safely and enjoyably run the trips. There were some seals around the island, including our star female “Kelp” lay on her customary rock. Lots of seabirds included guillemots, razorbilles, kittiwakes, gannets, common and sandwich terns and shags.
Unfortunately the weather over Friday and the weekend is looking really windy, but next week is looking great at the moment!
