Tuesday 11th June
Our Discovery Voyage trip this morning was very productive, with perfect sailing conditions and sunny weather – though still cold! We had a great encounter with common dolphins further out, and Duncan spotted a minke whale though it was too quick for the passengers to see. Close to the coast we found a group of…
Monday 10th June
It was a cool and breezy day today, but there was sunshine and a flat sea, so perfect for our Bay Discovery and Ocean Discovery trips. We could see the white waves and the swell further offshore so kept close to the coast. On this morning’s Bay Discovery we sailed past St Michael’s Mount before…
Thursday 6th June
We had an Ocean Discovery trip this morning in perfect sailing conditions though it feels more like April, temperature wise. Heading out we had an encounter with a scattered pod of four Risso’s dolphins – three adults and one calf. The mum/calf pair is the same one we saw yesterday, and the other two adults…
Wednesday 5th June
We had a Bay Discovery followed by a Discovery Voyage trip today. This morning we found four seals hauled out on the island, including “Kelp”. Two of them were getting extremely irritated by one another – it sounded like cats fighting. It was pretty windy, so while we had a good sail, everything else seemed…
Friday 31st May
We had to cancel yesterday because of the strong northerly wind, and it was still pretty breezy today. This is an offshore wind though, so close to the coast at least, it doesn’t make for rough conditions. On the morning Ocean Discovery we found some more Risso’s dolphins – a pair this time. They were…
Thursday 29th May
We had a great couple of Ocean Discovery trips today in improving conditions after the strong westerly wind of the last few days. This morning we found several small groups of common dolphins in the bay, feeding with large numbers of Manx shearwaters. There are also guillemots and razorbills amongst the big rafts of shearwaters…
Sightings summary for 2023
I have been looking back over 2023 and made some images to represent our sightings of different species. We recorded cetaceans on 81% of our trips last year, which is an amazing sightings rate. 10252 dolphins, porpoises and whales! We also saw grey seals on most trips, bluefin tuna and ocean sunfish. Each image has…
Tuesday 25th July
We had a long day today with two 3 hour Ocean Discovery trips followed by a 2 hour Bay Discovery. We saw lots of common dolphins on all three trips. This morning we saw them feeding with gannets and a little seal popped up with them, joining in with their hunting! We also saw harbour…
Wednesday 19th July
We had a four hour trip this morning followed by a two hour Bay Discovery. The four hourĀ Discovery Voyage was in the best sea conditions we have had for a four hour in a while and the guests had fantastic sightings! We saw Risso’s dolphins along with some tiny new calves, common dolphins also…
Monday 17th July
We had a couple of amazing trips today – a two hour private charter for a family this morning, and a four hour Discovery Voyage this afternoon. This morning we saw some fascinating behaviour from the Risso’s dolphins: huge splashes and leaps as well as the more usual sedate surfacing. The birds were very interested…
