Sunday 20th April

grey seal

It was a beautiful Easter Sunday though rather quiet for wildlife. We ran two Ocean Discovery, with 12 people on each – thanks for joining us today. This morning as well as the seabirds and a grey seal hauled out, we saw the biggest comb jellies we have ever seen though they were too deep for photos.  We would be interested to hear if anyone else spotted these lately. We also saw a compass jellyfish, which is the earliest in the season we have ever seen one. There was also a brief view of a porpoise.

This afternoon another seal had joined the female on the island, and we had a relaxing sail in the southerly breeze offshore, watching the seabirds. Two tall dorsal fins appeared once then disappeared – Risso’s dolphins? Possibly. They are recorded as “unidentified dolphins” anyway. It was cold when it clouded over, but the sun came back out for the end of the trip.
