Sunday 16th August

Fish leaping out of the ocean water.

Back out on the water after a day off yesterday when it was very windy. Conditions had not changed much, with loads of dolphin and tuna feeding inshore on this morning’s Discovery Voyage trip, and hundreds of gannets and gulls hunting with them. We also spotted several sunfish including one breacher. There were a few seals hauled out on the island. On the Bay Discovery this afternoon the birds could be seen stretching right across the bay, though the feeding frenzies were very short lived as they were being driven by the tuna. Occasionally we could see these busting at the surface, but far easier to see were the common dolphins of course. We also had great views again of a breaching ocean sunfish as it tried to bash the parasites off its skin. This has been the best sunfish season for years.
