Saturday 8th July

common dolphins

After a lot of wind the last couple of days we were back out on the water this afternoon. There was still a big swell running, which made the coastline look spectacular as the waves crashed against the cliffs. On the other hand, it made spotting conditions tricky! We had a good look along the coast for Risso’s dolphins but didn’t spot any, before sailing offshore. We saw lots of big waves, but little else until the end of the trip, when we found a large pod of common dolphins. These seemed to be absolutely loving the swell and the waves, and swimming alongside Shearwater II. It’s great to have your persistence rewarded.
