Saturday 8th August

This morning was one of our 5 hour Discovery Adventure trips and it certainly was a bit of an adventure. We ended up going about 14 miles south of Penzance in a choppy south easterly sea and building wind which created some exciting sailing conditions. On the way we picked up pod after small pod of common dolphins, both feeding, bowriding and socialising. They seemed to get a little peeved when we stopped to look at a sunfish, which dived away when they swam over to it. Further out the gulls and shearwaters were going absolutely bananas above a very large, dark cloud in the water – a massive shoal of baitfish, which the tuna were hunting below and the dolphins were also having a go. It was like a wildlife documentary. It’s always good to see gulls eating what they’re supposed to eat rather than scavenging for human rejects. We also saw some great and sooty shearwaters and storm petrels. It was a long sail back but the wind and waves were behind us this time.

This afternoon’s two hour trip was also fantastic. We had some lovely families onboard with some very excited children, whose anticipation wasn’t misplaced. Many more dolphins were spotted along with some large tuna who were jumping clear of the water this time. There’s really no better time than August to be out there!
