Saturday 3rd October

There has been some strong wind and brutal swell this well, so we have had four days off for the first time in months! The wind had completely dropped for today and the season is still going strong, so it was back out for an Ocean Discovery this morning and a Bay Discovery this afternoon. This morning there were scores of dolphins feeding in the bay along with bluefin tuna, gulls and gannets. Further out we saw another small pod of dolphins then in St Loy another burst of tuna feeding, and also unfortunately a dead porpoise. This had been well scavenged so impossible to guess at cause of death. At the end of the trip we found two seals hauled out on the island at high tide.
On the afternoon trip the dolphins were in a more interactive mood and swam alongside the boat for about half an hour – a special treat for the birthday people on board. There were also leaping tuna and incredibly we saw a small flock of white storks fly overhead! These are probably from the Cornwall Stork Project up near Padstow. We saw them fly over the harbour the other morning too, though this time got a photo (of sorts!)
