Saturday 23rd September

common dolphin

We had an Ocean Discovery followed by a Bay Discovery trip today in an increasingly blustery southerly wind. This morning it started off fairly calm, and we had great views of a pair of porpoises as they swam past the boat. Later on we found various small groups of common dolphins scattered through the bay, and several seals hauled out on the island. Unusually for the time of year we also saw an ocean sunfish. Seabird sightings included a great skua. The wind increased over lunch meaning the Bay Discovery was a very choppy trip – however we had some awesome sightings of a couple of large groups of dolphins feeding under gannets. We had great views of them surfing around us, and a bit later on we found two more groups a bit closer in to shore. We also spotted six seals round the island.
