Monday 30th June

Risso's dolphin leaping

What a day we had today on the last day of June. We found a dismembered cuttlefish on leaving the harbour on this morning’s Bay Discovery so were immediately on the alert for Risso’s dolphins. But it was common dolphins we found first – a medium sized group of adults and juveniles who  were keeping a very low profile and it soon became clear why. Some much bigger fins appeared further out – what appeared to be a bachelor pod of Risso’s dolphins who were in full on aggressive, boisterous mode. Lots of leaping, “headbanging”, rushing – what spectacular views they gave us. On the afternoon four hour trip, we found them again – much further out this time. More great views as they travelled slowly through areas of lots of seabirds. There were also several grey seals hauled out. Thankfully temperatures are not seeing the crazy heights of further east and it feels very pleasant out there. Next available spaces are on Wednesday.
