Monday 2nd September

common dolphins

We had a Discovery Voyage followed  by a Bay Discovery trip today. This morning started off really mizzly with poor vis, but it was due to lift so we set off optimistically! Sure enough, the sun didn’t exactly come out but it brightened and cleared enough to have a great trip. There were lots of common dolphins out there, and the seabirds which have now become expected. We also saw some crystal jellyfish, grey seals and long chains of salps. We also saw them in a curious ring formation which we haven’t seen before. On the afternoon Bay Discovery we weren’t hugely hopeful of finding dolphins, because the ones we’d seen in the morning were a long way offshore. However we saw a sleepy group of four near Mousehole who gave us some nice views. We also saw some grey seals and had a good sail across the bay in the building wind. With the westerly swell behind is, we had a proper surf! Near St Michael’s Mount we had some lovely views of feeding common terns.
