Friday 29th May

We had an Ocean Discovery trip followed by a Discovery Voyage trip today. Despite being at low tide when the seals should have been hauled out on the rocks, it was pretty quiet this morning. There are a staggering number of pot buoys round the island at the moment, so a lot of fishing effort. We did have some good views of seabirds including a puffin. On the afternoon trip we were able to head further out offshore using the building westerly breeze. Just where we though they would be, we started picking up a lot more shearwaters, then some bigger splashes – common dolphins. There were several small pods out there who were socialising and feeding – they swam with us a while and then carried on what they were doing. Sailing inshore we then picked up some much bigger fins – Risso’s dolphins this time. This was a different group to yesterday, being mainly much darker (younger). They were dozing by the coast doing what we describe as “logging” behaviour. It was a great trip.
